Mega Man 2

One of the pixelated greats.
One of the pixelated greats.

Mega Man 2 was released on December 14th, 1990 in Europe and went on to be one of the best selling games for the console. Mega Man 2 recieved a large amount of positive reviews, after the relatively modest success of Mega Man, and went on to become one of the greatest games of all time.

Selling 1.5 million copies to date, it is the best selling Mega Man title in the series and has recently found its way onto mobile platforms, as well as a downloadable game on Wii Marketplace.

Plot & Influences

Mega Man 2 takes place after the original Mega Man, in which he defeated Dr. Wily and his six robotic sidekicks, which was set in the year 200X. In this game Dr. Wily has created eight new robots and created a base for himself and its up to Mega Man to stop them once again.

This game is a great example of a simple plot. The storyline is established before you even start the first level and then you are left to complete it. The storyline after the intro is in the background.

What is fun about this game?

  • Fast paced action. The game requires a lot of mental thinking, despite not showing it to anyone watching the player. The player must memorise patterns of traps, enemies and disappearing platforms.
  • Well designed bosses. Each boss has a weakness so the order in which you kill the bosses can give you advantages against later bosses. Dynamic gameplay so it changes everytime you play it.
  • Excellent level design. Each level is different and has a great layout. Some levels are slippery, some are windy which you must fight against, others have conveyor belts for the floor and some are in the dark. Each level is individual and that helps keep players interested in the game as it never becomes repetative. It also ensures that the levels, while they have the same goal, are never similar so the player doesn't get bored as easily.
  • The difficulty in the game is just perfect. The balance is right in the centre of the difficulty scale. Not too easy yet not too hard. Challenging but not impossible.
